CONCEPT: THE GRID & THE BLOB
The project “Transcendence” explores the fusion of two opposing architectural concepts at one of Vienna’s busiest traffic hubs. The design juxtaposes a rigid, rational steel framework (“The Grid”) with an organic, free-flowing volume (“The Blob”) suspended within it. This contrast creates a unique dialogue between strict organization and creative freedom.
URBAN MEGASTRUCTURE
Located at Matzleinsdorfer Platz, a site dominated by train tracks and heavy traffic, the building acts as a bridging megastructure. By lifting the public functions onto a higher level, the project creates a “Third Place”,a calm urban sanctuary disconnected from the noise below, serving both locals and visitors.
SPATIAL PROGRAM
While the steel grid responds to the surrounding perimeter block development, the organic “Blob” inside breaks with convention. It houses the auditorium and exhibition spaces, creating a fluid interior landscape. This “building within a building” encourages visitors to explore new perspectives and transcends the traditional boundaries of functional architecture.
